Asking the school to keep you in the loop

If you have parental responsibility, you’re normally entitled to be involved in your child’s education and to receive school information, even if the child doesn’t live with you. Often the school just has one parent’s details, and a short note fixes it. See the school page for more.

  • Keep it polite and matter of fact. Schools deal with this all the time.
  • Send it to the school office or the head teacher, and keep a copy.
Letter
Dear [school / head teacher], I am [your name], [child]'s father. [Child] is in [class/year]. I have parental responsibility for [child]. Following our family's separation, I would like to make sure I stay fully involved in their education. Please could you add my contact details to your records so that I receive the same communications as [child]'s other parent, including school reports, newsletters, information about parents' evenings and any concerns. I would also like to be able to attend parents' evenings and school events. I want to support [child] and the school however I can. Thank you for your help. Yours sincerely, [Your name] [Date] [Contact details]
